Scatter (2016)

PROJECT Trio is a vibrant and genre-defying group. They are explosive, virtuosic, and sensitive musicians, and can play anything you put in front of them. When they approached me about writing their first ever concerto, I was beyond thrilled. I knew this would be one of the most challenging and rewarding projects I would ever work on.

The piece you are about to hear, Scatter, is an electroacoustic triple concerto. It embraces electronics, improvisation, complex rhythmic grooves, and very atmospheric and lyrical music. Although written in three distinct sections (1. slow-atmospheric-groove; 2. disjointed-improvised-off kilter groove; 3. atmospheric-lyrical-celebratory groove), the concerto is 18 minutes long without a pause. The electronic component that provides added colors and ambient tones is heard at different times throughout the score. It also marks the beginning of each section, so the electronics will be the first sound that you hear before the orchestra enters.

Scatter is dedicated to Eric Stephenson, Greg Pattillo, and Peter Seymour.
