Whispering Voices, commissioned by Gretchen Van Hoesen, is a set of eight characteristic pieces. The movements are rather short, but are connected to each other by the theme of night. I imagined eight different characters representing different aspects of nighttime. As a child, I grew up in a quiet rural town of 750 people. During the night I would hear all sorts of natural soundsthe wind, animals or whispering voices from afar- that would stir my imagination. This work is a musical memory of those nighttime experiences.
